What Is Exercise Therapy?

Exercise therapy is the correction of postural problems and abnormal movement patterns caused by muscle imbalances around a joint, through the use of deep tissue sports massage, muscle energy techniques and remedial exercise.

If we think of the body as a being held in its correct alignment by groups of elastic cables (the muscles) surrounding each joint then we can imagine if the cables on one side of a joint become abnormally shortened  and tight  (hypertonic) through injury or overuse, the cables on the other side will  become lengthened and weakened (hypotonic).  At rest such a joint is observed to be in an excessively flexed or hyper extended position, whilst in motion the imbalance manifests itself as an abnormal movement pattern or joint instability.  Eventually the abnormal position is accepted as "normal" but the pain, stiffness and inflammation may remain along with a greater chance of reccuring injury and osteoarthritis.

By using a combination of deep tissue sport massage, muscle energy techniques and mobility exercises we can help the shortened (hypertonic) muscles return to their optimal length.  We then apply strengthening and re-educating exercises to the lengthened (hypotonic) opposing muscles to complete the balance around the joint.  The result is that the joint regains its natural position, becomes more stable and can move in its intended pattern and without causing you undue pain.
